Cancel Helsana insurance

If you want to cancel your basic or supplementary insurance, there are a few things to bear in mind. Here you can find all the key information, from the correct procedure to the right time to cancel.

How to cancel your health insurance

Whether you’re switching to another insurer, cancelling because of a death or moving abroad: in Switzerland, you can cancel your basic and supplementary insurance with a health insurance company. Your new health insurer will normally help you with the cancellation process. There are some differences in the cancellation process to bear in mind, depending on the type of insurance.

Cancelling basic insurance

  • Basic insurance is compulsory in Switzerland.
  • Notice period: 1 month
  • Cancellation date: as of 31 December
  • Notice of cancellation must reach us by no later than the last working day in November, during business hours. The postmark is not relevant.
  • You must have no outstanding premium invoices and must be able to produce confirmation of subsequent insurance.
  • ‎Confirmation of subsequent insurance must be sent to us directly by your new health insurer. (We cannot accept insurance policies as confirmation).

Special case: Cancellation for policyholders who have taken out our BASIS basic model, with a deductible of CHF 300 (no deductible for children): basic insurance may be cancelled as of 30 June. The notice period is 3 months. Notice of cancellation must reach us by no later than the last working day in March.

Cancelling supplementary insurance

  • Supplementary insurance is not compulsory.
  • Cancellation date: as of 31 December
  • Notice period: 3 months
  • Notice of cancellation must reach us by no later than the last working day in September, during business hours. The postmark is not relevant.
  • If the insurance premium changes (loss of a discount/reduction does not count as a premium change), a one-month notice period applies from the date of notification of the change. In this case, notice of cancellation must reach us by no later than the last working day in November.
